PLN? (Personal/Professional Learning Networks) What is all the fuss about? I searched my PLN to find out:
With technology on the rise and information changing so quickly, we as teachers must adapt as well. A PLN provides a resource where we can get instant feedback in "Real Time" from people in the same profession as us. A PLN provides constant learning which in turn helps us to become better thinkers, more creative, and overall great at what we do. People without a PLN are very limited in their resources. Yes, they can "google" search just about anything, but imagine the time wasted using that simple tool alone. With a PLN you have thousands of people who can give you what you are seeking in many different ways... instantly! It is crucial in today's day and age to embrace this concept and understand that without a PLN we are limited in many areas, trapped in an old way of thinking, and not quite ready to move into the 21st century as teachers. A good teacher never stops learning and can adapt to the students they have. The main focus of the is session will be the set-up and use of a Diigo social web annotation/bookmarking/sharing account. For me, this has been the greatest educational tool I have ever encountered. Curious about Twitter - no, I thought it was really stupid too - until recently. Nings are cool.

Google Apps – Roland
Documents: Students can upload, download, save, and share online Powerpoint, Word, Excel, and data base files. One unique feature: a group of students can access and edit the same Word or PowerPoint file at the same time. This software allows students to collaborate online to complete assignments and projects. It can also be used to create electronic portfolios and student wikis.
Sites: Students and teachers can create websites, blogs, or wikis and share them with a small group, a class, or the world. All content can be monitored and managed by supervising teachers.
Gmail: Students have close to eight gigabytes of memory for storing and saving email. Gmail automatically scans file attachments for viruses, and has other features that differentiate it from other email applications.
This session will be an introduction to Google Apps, and participants will be able to create a new Gmail account to try the many features of this software.

Digital Photography as an Art and a Science – Barry
Thanks to the technology built into today's digital cameras, taking a picture is as simple as pressing a button. Taking a quality photograph however, requires considerably more effort. In this session we will split our time to introduce the fundamentals of the art of photography (for example composition and lighting), as well as the science of photography (including white balance and crop ratios). We will also introduce the idea of workflow: how to best manage and protect your images from accidental loss.

Students are engaged with Digital Story Telling. Based on Combined Drama/Art Middle School Project, this session will review the steps of planning a story. Participants will learn the process of using a still digital camera to create the visuals and then import them into software to create a stop motion animation movie.This session will cover the basics, shortcuts based on my experience will be shared, and you will have hands-on time to create your own video.

Progress Reports in FAWeb for M/S and S/S Teachers– Bruce
This session will show you how to create progress reports for individual students using FAWEB. As a teacher, you can run the Progress Report in FAWEB to list grade information for your scheduled classes and students. As an advisor, you can run the report for students who are your advisees. You can create a summary report which includes only category averages, final averages, and final marking column grades for each student. You can also create a detailed report which additionally includes assignment grades for each student. This session will also look at exporting grade data into Excel.

This application allows teachers and students to make digital audio recordings in the computer lab. These recordings can be made into part of a collection, portfolio or used for assessment of, for and especially as learning.... EPearl can be used in connection with any subject (specifically oral performance), but it lends itself particularly well to languages (practice oral reading & speaking), literature (prose or poetry readings or recitals) and music (vocal or instrumental). It is easy and fun to use, but it also provides an opportunity for self-regulated learning:
How can we keep track of what we've learned?
How can we think about the way in which we learn, reach conclusions about it and improve our skills over time?
Who is driving our own learning processes?
How are these skills transferred to life outside the classroom?
The Research
Research evidence has established the value of portfolios as a way to capture students' metacognitive processes and evidence of learning. Two decades of evidence has also indicated the importance of developing students' self-regulatory skills - the cycle of Forethought, Performance and Self-reflection - both for successful school learning as well as for self-directed learning in adulthood. Self-regulation, research tells us, is a LIFE SKILL.
Greg will be sharing the basic how-to of ePearl, his experiences with it and insights on the impact of ePearl use on his students. Bring your laptop.
